WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Proving that some golfing couples who play together, stay together, a full field of twosomes is expected for the 16th annual couples tournament at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, Nov. 3 – 4. The Golden Horseshoe is part of Colonial Williamsburg’s Resort Collection located adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area.
Defending champions Sandy Scitti and Art Jakovics last year won for a record fourth time, but since no team has repeated since 1997, a new champion could be predicted for 2008.
The Golden Horseshoe couples tournament is 36 holes of stroke play that utilizes both the Gold Course and Green Course. The first round is four-ball (two-person, best ball), with the team’s gross and net scores used; the second round is “captain’s choice,” with gross and net scores used. Teams will be flighted by total handicap. Handicaps will be verified with players’ home courses prior to the tournament.
The entry fee of $470 per couple includes practice rounds on both courses, two tournament rounds, golf carts for tournament rounds, tee gifts, prizes, welcome reception, tournament banquet and closing reception. Entry deadline is Oct. 27, 2008, at 5 p.m.
Special room rates are available at the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel & Suites, an official Colonial Williamsburg hotel. Rates start at $109 per room, per night, excluding tax and gratuity. To make a reservation, call 1-800-447-8679 and ask for the couples tournament competitor’s package, or visit www.goldenhorseshoegolf.com.
The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is a championship venue widely acclaimed for its two dynamic golf designs: the Gold Course, originally designed by the famed Robert Trent Jones Sr. and renovated by his son Rees Jones (6,817 yards from the championship tees), and the Green Course, a Rees Jones la yout (7,120-yards from the tips). GOLF Magazine, in its September 2006 issue, ranked the Gold Course No. 48 on its “Top 100 Courses You Can Play” for 2006-07.
In 2007 the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club hosted the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship on the Gold Course, where Stanford University won the team title and Jamie Lovemark of the University of Southern California was individual champion. The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club also has hosted such prestigious events as the 2004 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, 2002 Virginia State Senior Amateur, 2001 NCAA Division I Men’s Regional, and 1998 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
