(VEDBAEK, DENMARK) – The R&A, organisers of The Open Championship, shows continued faith in TrackMan™ technology with this year’s tournament at Royal Birkdale. TrackMan™ data will be captured and broadcasted on four holes during The Open Championship, Tuesday through Sunday.
During The 2008 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, July 17-20, TrackMan™ data will be presented during live competition for the third time in The Open Championship history. In 2007, TrackMan™ monitors measured competitor tee shots on two tees. For 2008, TrackMan™ technology will capture shot data – including club delivery data, player launch and trajectory data – on four tees (#3, #6, #12 and #17), during practice and competition rounds. Some of these data will be broadcasted live – by BBC, ABC and TNT – to television viewers around the world.
During tournament play from Thursday through Sunday, club head speed, ball speed, carry distance and 3D graphics (ball flight trajectory) for contestants in The Open Championship will be delivered to the television audience. Additional parameters, such as spin rate and launch angle, may also be examined live.
TrackMan™’s continued presence at the Open Championship will enable The R&A to gather significant input for its extensive research, increasing its understanding of, among other things, how today’s Open Championship courses are approached and played.
Dr Steve Otto of The R&A said, “We are very pleased to develop our cooperation with TrackMan™ year after year. We are highly confident in the technology and look forward to reviewing the TrackMan™ data following The Open Championship. In particular, the use of TrackMan™ on the par 3 12th hole will lead to some interesting data.”
Klaus Eldrup-Jorgensen, President of ISG, stated: “We are proud to continue our contribution to The Open Championship as ball flight and club movement data will be measured and analysed by TrackMan™ technology. We are excited that The R&A has chosen to use TrackMan™ on four tees during The 2008 Open Championship as this reflects the increasing interest in TrackMan™ that we are experiencing from all parts of the golfing community.”
The data provided by the TrackMan™ Tour System includes 3-D shot trajectory, carry distance, ball landing position, ball speed, vertical launch angle, spin rate, club speed, and more.

Headquartered in Vedbaek, Denmark, ISG A/S is the developer and owner of the TrackMan™ system. Based on Doppler radar technology, TrackMan™ measures exact 3-dimensional club movement and provides highly accurate data on the ball launch, ball flight, and ball landing coordinates of any golf shot. In addition, TrackMan™ measures actual spin rate of the ball without marking it and features outstanding portability, reliability, and ease of use. As such, TrackMan™ has set a new standard for golf ball and golf club measurement and is currently in use worldwide by almost every major golf club, golf shaft, and golf ball manufacturer, as well the USGA and the R&A. With recent software upgrades, an improved price, and both FCC and CE approval, ISG is making the TrackMan™ technology available to a wider range of customers including golf clubs, golf academies, golf ranges, club-fitters, tour professionals, and serious players.
