TEMECULA, Calif. (June 17, 2008) — Corey Pavin, U.S. Open Champion, three-time Ryder Cup team member and UCLA Bruin, recently returned from Texas to his home state of California and announced he will represent Journey at Pechanga as the touring pro.
Pavin will act as a national spokesperson to create awareness for the course, and he will participate in numerous events scheduled at Journey at Pechanga throughout the year.
Journey at Pechanga, an impressive upscale 18-Hole public golf course designed by award-winning architect Arthur Hills with Partner Steve Forrest, is the latest addition to the AAA Four Diamond Pechanga Resort & Casino destination, which features the very best in hotel luxury, gaming excitement, headline entertainment, and quality dining.
Nestled in the foothills of the Pechanga Indian Reservation in scenic Temecula, Southern California, Journey was designed with environmental responsibility and a keen sensitivity to preserving the beautiful and historic tribal lands and rich culture of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians.
“This golf course is 10,000 years in the making,” said Amy Minniear, President of Pechanga Development Corporation. “This is our homeland, the place where our ancestors thrived. We wanted to pay tribute to that in every element of Journey’s construction.”
Accordingly, the course’s name comes from the Luiseño word pomniv, meaning “the path that was once traveled.” Each hole bears a Luiseño name, and the course grounds host cultural exhibits that chronicle the history of the Pechanga people.
Journey’s layout, which rises and falls some 300 feet in 18 holes, also takes full advantage of the majestic scenery of the Temecula Valley. Journey winds its way across the Pechanga River over impressive rustic wooden bridges, giving spectacular views of the canyons and ravines that are native to the Valley.
But Journey at Pechanga is far more than a beautiful place to play. Its unique and intriguing design also accommodates a range of players’ abilities-a feature Corey Pavin immediately noticed.
“Journey at Pechanga is a beautiful golf course with multiple teeing grounds on each hole to create a stringent challenge for the best golfers or a relaxed atmosphere for the average player. On my first visit, I felt that the flow of the golf course and the variety of holes would make for a very enjoyable round of golf.” said Pavin.
Pavin is confident that many others will also love the course, and he anticipates a great working relationship with Pechanga as he helps present Journey to the public: “It will be my privilege and pleasure to represent Journey.”
The Oxnard, Calif. native turned pro in 1982 and quickly established himself with three international victories in 1983 and his first PGA Tour victory in 1984. Pavin won at least one event on either the PGA Tour or the International Tour nearly every year for the next decade, and topped the PGA Tour’s money list in 1991. Pavin’s success culminated in winning the 1995 U.S. Open and in 2006, he won his 15th career title.
Journey at Pechanga’s Grand Opening is scheduled for November 2008 upon completion of a 62,000-square foot Clubhouse accentuated by the latest in high-end resort amenities. Local golfers are invited to book tee times starting in August. For more information on Pechanga Resort & Casino or Journey at Pechanga, call 1-877-711-2WIN.
