LAKE MARY, FL – Timacuan Golf & Country Club General Manager Tony Johnson has been named “Golf Professional Of The Year” by the East Central Chapter of the North Florida PGA.
This is the second time Johnson has won this honor. After winning it in 2005 he went on to be named the North Florida PGA Golf Professional of the Year, and is now up for that award again this year.
Johnson, a PGA professional since 1994, has been in his current position at Timacuan since April of 2000. He is a past president of the East Central Chapter, and is currently an officer with the North Florida section.
“I am truly honored to be recognized by my fellow professionals for this award,” said Johnson. “We have a tremendous staff here at Timacuan, and I couldn’t have even been considered for this honor if it weren’t for them. They share in this award.”
Johnson started in the golf business as a volunteer starter at Eastwood Golf Club in 1989. Five years later he had worked his way up to head golf professional there. He and his wife Lori live in Oviedo with their three children, Alexa, Caleigh and Anthony.
The presentation was made at an awards ceremony at Timacuan, sponsored by Nike Golf. Chapter President Bob Reed announced 10 other award winners. They were: Horton Smith Award: Kevin Weickel, Disney Worldwide Services; Bill Strausbaugh Award: Tony Austin, Austin Brothers Golf Services; Teacher of the Year: Chip Koehlke, Faldo Golf Institute; Junior Golf Leader: Mike Warobick, US 1 Golf Center; Assistant Golf Professional of the Year: Carl McNeill, C.C. of Orlando; Merchandisers of the Year: Bill Sellers, C.C. of Orlando, Matt Payne, Victoria Hills, Patrick Dill, Ritz Carlton G.C.; Sales Representative of the Year: Peter Leveille, Ahead Golf; Amateur of the Year: Peter Watzka, Ritz Carlton Development.
Timacuan has been one of Central Florida’s most popular courses since opening in 1988. It has garnered many statewide awards, being ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida by The Florida Golf Reporter Magazine. It is owned and managed by Kitson & Partners, and was designed by Ron Garl. The course underwent a renovation by designer Bobby Weed in 1996.
The course is located near Interstate 4, just minutes from downtown Orlando. For more information visit www.golftimacuan.com, or call 407-321-0010 to book a tee time.
