New search engine launched by Google alumni has largest number of indexed pages on the web
CARLSBAD, Calif. (July 29, 2008) – amateurgolf.com announces an initial top ranking position on newly-launched search engine Cuil, which made its high profile debut Monday sporting the highest number of indexed pages on the web. The launch of Cuil was covered by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and many other media outlets and a spike in traffic to the site has been seen.
For the keyword term “Golf Tournaments” amateurgolf.com ranks number one, an unpaid location at the top of the page based on relevancy to the topic, and a number of other factors. (Search engines are very secretive about giving away what those factors are to keep sites from beating the system.)
“We have always ranked highly on Google, consistently coming up in the top 5 results for several key search teams,” said amateurgolf.com Founder Pete Wlodkowski. “When a new service like Cuil debuts it is gratifying to land at the top there as well.”
Founded by former Google developer Anna Paterson with her husband Tom Costello, Cuil (pronounced “cool”) indexes the largest number of pages on the web. That number is a whopping 121,617,892,992 as of this press release. At first glance the Cuil site functions just as quickly as Google, but the results are displayed more elegantly with related links being easily accessed via a menu interface that shows other searches of interest. Unlike Google, thumbnail photos are visible in the results.
Search is definitely important for any content site. In any given month, Google searches provide amateurgolf.com with as many as 10,000 referrals each month. With over 60% of the search market, it is unlikely that Google will be up seated by Cuil in the near future, but being ranked highly on the site is huge validation for amateurgolf.com, where traffic growth is an important goal in the next 12 months. “Version 3.0” of the amateurgolf.com website launched on July 1st and plans on launching several related sites in late 2008.
