CRYSTAL RIVER, FL (August 12, 2008) – Southern hospitality and a love of the game brought many well known golfers to Florida’s Nature Coast 50 years ago. And today, things haven’t changed.
In 1955, construction began on a new golf course in Crystal River, Florida. Originally designed by highly regarded course architect Mark Mahannah, it opened in two years later under the name Paradise Country Club, and today operates under the name “The Championship Course” at the Plantation Golf Resort & Spa.
The course hosted professional golfers Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Tony Lema, and Lee Trevino back in the day; and a number of touring pros lived near the golf course in the winter including Tommy Bolt, Frank Stranahan, Ken Venturi, and Al Balding.

The Championship Course provides the ideal setting to fine-tune a player’s golf game. Featuring 18 holes the course is an “equal opportunity course” where pars, birdies, and bogies await golfers of every skill level.
“The course has certainly aged well, with an assortment of challenging fairways lined by mature emerald pine and oak trees native to the region,” said Brothers. “And in true Florida style, there are a variety of water hazards on the course.”
Plantation Golf Resort & Spa added a second course in 1982. Focusing on wedge play and putting, the Lagoons Course was designed to offer golfers the opportunity to play a “quick nine” and sharpen their skills.
