2nd Vegas Golfer in 3 Weeks Wins on Nationwide Tour

The depth of talent in Las Vegas of those golfers playing professional golf just keeps getting deeper and deeper. A couple weeks ago, Bill Lunde, whose career seemed over at about this time last year, won a Nationwide Tour event, and in the process almost clinched his exempt status on the PGA Tour for 2009. And now Scott Piercy, a 29-year old pro whose biggest success before this time last season (he won the Ultimate Game at Wynn) came on the Hooters Tour, has cashed the champion’s check, winning the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open by two shots. Piercy collected about $94,000 for the win and jumped from 123rd on the money list to 35th, just 10 spots from the coveted Top 25 that ensures full PGA Tour playing priviliges for the following season. The Ultimate Game win was worth $2 million (half of the purse went to Piercy; the other half to his investors), but this win could be the true Ultimate victory. “It could be worth more than (the Ultimate Game win),” Piercy said.

Checking Out the Holes of Las Vegas’ Painted Desert

Painted Desert Golf Club is seemingly a Vegas original. This golf course, designed by the esteemed Jay Morrish, was the first, true desert golf course in the Las Vegas area, and has enjoyed cool moments like hosting the Nevada Open tournament and being the site of PGA Tour star Robert Gamez’ course record round of 62. Painted Desert Golf Club is 18 holes of kinder, softer desert golf with generous fairways and non-death defying carries from tee box to fairways and greens. And you can now view the holes of Painted Desert Golf Club including the official signature hole of this Las Vegas golf course. The signature hole listed at painteddesertgc.com is the par 3, 187-yard, 8th hole that plays over water to a green guarded by bunkers back and left. “We knew that the course was going to be a daily fee so we made sure it was user friendly by staying away from creating deep bunkers or other tough design elements,” Morrish has said.

Jack Nicklaus’ Coyote Springs: Vegas’ Western Golf Home of the PGA

With the PGA Championship, the major for the true pro, being played, the thoughts here at Golf Las Vegas Now wandered to about 50 miles north of the Las Vegas Strip, to PGA Village Coyote Springs. The new area is now the western home of the PGA of America, the organizers of the PGA Championship. PGA Village Coyote Springs is home to Jack Nicklaus’ newest Las Vegas golf course, The Chase, and plans for the area are visionary and ambitious. The Village is a part of the larger Coyote Springs, a new “city” being created from the desert, and plans for the completed project call for thousands of homes, several golf courses, and everything else that goes along with a city. “Together with The PGA of America, the PGA Village designation and the golf facilities that will be built at Coyote Springs, we have all the elements of a special community that is certain to become the next great American golf destination, literally next door to the world’s most exciting vacation destination,” says Harvey Whittemore, Chairman and Founder of Coyote Springs.
