(CARMEL, CA, September 15, 2008) The Shivas Irons Society today announced that it had made a $5,000 cash donation to the Bhutan Youth Golf Association. The Society and its members are also behind a major effort to collect golf equipment and clothing for use by aspiring young golfers in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan.

“We are deeply grateful to the members of the Shivas Irons Society for their tangible support of our mission,” said Rick Lipsey, founder of the Bhutan Youth Golf Association. The Association was created in 2002, and its mission is to share golf with the youth of Bhutan and, through the game, to teach Bhutan’s children to express friendship, honesty, integrity, morality and self-motivation.

“We feel this outreach is a real win-win for both organizations,” commented Steve Cohen, President of the Shivas Irons Society. “In supporting the BYGA’s mission, we advance one of our own goals, which is to promote accessibility and education through golf.”

In 2006, Luke Brosterhous, SIS member and PGA professional, spent five months in Bhutan teaching with the BYGA. During the spring of 2008, Luke hosted16 members of the Society on a nine-day tour that included numerous rounds of golf on the country’s only public course in the capital city of Thimpu. The group’s interest in encouraging youth golf in Bhutan lead to the cash donation, which will be used for equipment, instruction, events and transportation.

Fundraising for the BYGA is handled through the ‘Friends of the Bhutan Youth Golf Association,’ a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in New York City. Additional information can be found at www.golfbhutan.com.

The Shivas Irons Society is a California 501(c)3 non-profit organization based on the Monterey Peninsula. It was founded in 1992 and seeks to provide its members with opportunities for community, discovery and transformation through golf. The Society publishes The Journal of the Shivas Irons Society, hosts a variety of regional, national and international activities for its members, and funds a summer golf scholarship program for deserving youth.
