Foundation Junior Tour Crowns “Players of the Year”
Biloxi, MS – After Katrina’s impact area golf courses wanted to help the community – the Gulf Coast Golf Foundation was formed in 2005 to do just that. The mission of this 501 c3 charitable organization is to “Help Kids and The Community through Golf.” The Gulf Coast Junior Golf Tour, previously managed by the MS Gulf Coast Golf Association, was nurtured to make golf and the game’s life lessons more accessible to local kids with free membership and low entry fees of $10 per event. Coast golf courses donated their facilities and local junior golf enthusiasts donated their time including this year’s Tournament Director Chris Altese of The Bridges Golf Club. “We had 111 junior members this year – our most successful year ever – and we had our first two day Junior Amateur Championship to cap a great season. It is very exciting to see so many of our juniors playing competitively and enjoying the game,” says Chris Altese.
The Gulf Coast Junior Golf Tour completed its summer schedule with the Gulf Coast Junior Amateur Championship at Sunkist Country Club in Biloxi, Mississippi this weekend. This major junior championship was worth double player of the year points and was critical to determining the extremely tight point’s race in all age divisions. The GCJGT Players of the Year for “10 & Under” was Jonah Monson, “11 – 12” was Zachary Myers. “13 – 14” was Emily Ross, “15 & Up” was Johnathon Boothby and the Overall Champion was Zachary Myers (4-time winner in 2008). Special thanks go to St, Andrews, Windance, The Oaks, The Bridges, Diamondhead, Sunkist and all the volunteers including Bruce Schaefer, John Pettito, Chip Bourg, Tommy Snell, Billy Baumgartner, Eric Kinard, and Hoppy Smith.
