Notes: Ryder Cup First Tee Jitters; Las Vegas Golf Courses Shape Up

Musings from the world of Las Vegas golf this week include former UNLV All-American Chad Campbell playing for the U.S. in the Ryder Cup this weekend and reliving his first-tee jitters; Las Vegas pros making a mark on the Nationwide Tour and soon-to-be PGA Tour; a few Las Vegas golfers attemtping to qualify for the LPGA Tour; celebrities committing to play in events on Las Vegas golf courses; and we remind golfers of the world that the end of September through the rest of the year is when Las Vegas golf courses are in the best shape due to the overseeds that are now being completed. Plus, some Las Vegas WSNGA ladies are champs. “I remember my first Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills, and I’ve never been so nervous on that first tee box,” says Campbell from Valhalla, site of the Ryder Cup. “But it gets a little bit better. But it always gets your juices flowing whenever you get up there on that first tee box, they announce your name from USA, and it’s a great feeling, and that’s what we all play for.”

Natalie Gulbis Headlines Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge

In 2008, the Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge, an event that pits three-player teams from the LPGA Tour, PGA Tour and Champions Tour against each other, moves from Las Vegas golf course Reflection Bay Golf Club at Lake Las Vegas Resort to the beautiful Rees Jones-designed Rio Secco Golf Club, home of the Butch Harmon School of Golf. Lake Las Vegas resident Natalie Gulbis could call Rio Secco her second home because she trains with Harmon at his facility, so when the Wendy’s event tees off she will feel good about her surroundings. Gulbis is making her third-straight appearance in the event–she helped lead the LPGA Tour to a victory in 2007–and is joined by Helen Alfredsson and Christie Kerr. Reports have Rocco Mediate, Stuart Cink and Kenny Perry representing the PGA Tour, and Jay Haas, Fred Funk and Nick Price playing for the Champions Tour. Top prize is bragging rights and a share of the million-dollar purse.

Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya Plays Reflection Bay Golf Club

Boxing great and Golden Boy Promotions Founder Oscar De La Hoya recently found some time to play golf at Reflection Bay Golf Club, one of three Las Vegas golf courses located at Lake Las Vegas Resort. Steve Carp, the longtime reporter for the Las Vegas Review Journal, interviewed De La Hoya about his upcoming fight card that he is promoting, but only after “The Golden Boy” had played Jack Nicklaus’ Lake Las Vegas gem. He reportedly shot 79 over the 18 holes that rest on the shores of Lake Las Vegas. Oscar is an avid golfer, and he recently hosted his 9th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic in California to raise dollars for his foundation that benefits several charities.
