CELEBRATION, FL-(October 2, 2008)-In October 2006, Laura Rhodes helped her best friend battle breast cancer. Laura accompanied her friend Christy to all her doctor appointments and held her hand after a double mastectomy. At the time, Laura had no idea that she was about to face the same ordeal.
Just three months later, Laura was told that she had a breast lump and would also need a double mastectomy, followed by six weeks of chemotherapy. Laura sought out organizations like the American Cancer Society (ACS) for support and advice. She was paired up with a cancer survivor through the ACS’s Peer to Reach Program.
Laura’s ASC peer and other survivors suggested she get a second opinion, and more importantly, scans done. Laura received more bad news. Her cancer was diagnosed at stage 4, and the breast cancer had metastasized to her lungs, liver, and bones.
At the age of 33, and engaged to be married, Laura was in complete shock. However, she didn’t let her cancer or the aggressive treatments get her down.
She was married to Richard in the Fall of 2007, went on a honeymoon to Hawaii where she biked 20 miles down a volcano, purchased a new home, and continues to work full time.
The cancer has spread to various parts of her body, including two brain tumors, but for the first time in a year and half, Laura’s doctor said she is stable.
“Chemo is a part of my life and I accept that,” said Laura. “Support groups, such as the ones offered through the ACS, acupuncture, and faith in God are also big components in my life.”
Mystic Dunes Golf Club and parent company Tempus Resorts International want to help breast cancer patients such as Laura. For the fourth consecutive year, Mystic Dunes will host the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic.
This year’s golf tournament will be held on Friday, October 17, 2008. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s 10th Annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” fund-raising event. Registration will begin at 12:00 noon and the scramble starts at 1:00 p.m. A reception including a silent auction will round out the day.
