PGA Tour Rookie Puts New TaylorMade Burner Driver, New TaylorMade Tour Preferred Irons in Play this Week and Wins Turning Stone Resort Championship
CARLSBAD, Calif. (October 6, 2008) – TaylorMade-adidas Golf (TMaG) Tour Staff professional and PGA Tour rookie Dustin Johnson made the most of his phenomenal length en route to a one-stroke victory at the Turning Stone Resort Championship, his first PGA Tour victory. Though wet conditions forced the lengthy Atunyote Golf Club to play even longer than its 7,482 yards, Johnson used TaylorMade’s new Burner® driver and TaylorMade TP Red™ ball with LDP to lead the field in driving distance with an average of 303.8 yards. Likewise his consistently strong approach play with his brand new TaylorMade Tour Preferred® irons was critical to his victory.
Johnson saw and tried the new Burner driver and new Tour Preferred irons last Monday at an extensive shoot for future TaylorMade television and print advertising. “Dustin was taken with them right away,” said Keith Sbarbaro, TMaG’s vice president of tour operations. “He loved the new, fast look of the Burner driver and the way the ball screams off the face. He loved the clean look of the Tour Preferred irons and their soft feel, and how they combine workability with great forgiveness. He left directly from our shoot to Turning Stone, and insisted on taking all the new clubs with him.” Learn more about the new Burner driver and newTour Preferred irons.
Trailing by two shots through 16 holes in the final round, Johnson crushed a 328-yard drive on the 17th and later sank a six-foot birdie putt to tie for the lead. On 18 he followed his 356-yard tee shot on the final hole, a par-five, with a 256-yard Rescue® hybrid just long of the green. After chipping to eight feet he rammed the uphill birdie putt home to take the lead and secure the win. Johnson’s $1.08 million winner’s check vaulted him from 128th to 41st on the PGA Tour money list, and carries a two-year exemption, ensuring his playing privileges through the end of 2010.
“Obviously it’s a great feeling. I feel like I’ve worked real hard the last month to get my game in shape tobe in the position to win a tournament, so I’m very excited,” Johnson said.
