Alexandria, VA – October 14, 2008 – The Club Managers Association of America has joined a broad coalition to advance National Drug-Free Work Week, a U.S. Department of Labor-sponsored event that will take place October 20 – 26. Through a variety of member communication efforts, including Web-based information and publications, CMAA will be educating clubs nationwide about ways to keep their facilities drug-free and safe.
According to a report released through George Washington University earlier this year entitled Workplace Screening & Brief Intervention: What Employers Can and Should Do About Excessive Alcohol Use, U.S. companies lose $185 billion annually due to employee alcohol problems. These losses are related to increased health care costs and workplace accidents. The three industries that are most prone to alcohol problems are construction, manufacturing and hospitality.
The purpose of National Drug-Free Work Week is to educate employers, employees and the general public about the importance of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful workplace. Now in its third year, this annual campaign is a collaborative effort among the Labor Department, members of its Drug-Free Workplace Alliance and other public- and private-sector organizations devoted to safe and healthy workplaces. However, all employers and employees are encouraged to participate.
“CMAA is proud to be a part of this year’s National Drug-Free Work Week,” says CMAA Chief Executive Officer Jim Singerling, CCM, CEC. “We want to spread the message that working drug-free works, and we want to highlight the benefits that drug-free workplace programs bring to clubs, their employees, and their communities.”
