Continuing the blistering play that has made him one of the hottest players on the Nationwide Tour, Matt Bettencourt putted his way into a sudden death playoff at this weekend’s Miccosukee Championship in Miami, Florida.
With help from his SuperStroke™ grip, Bettencourt drained a pressure-packed 15-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to finish at 12-under-par 272 and move into a tie for the lead at the end of regulation.
Though he lost in the sudden death playoff, Bettencourt’s enthusiasm was unabated as his Miccosukee finish, combined with a win at last month’s Oregon Classic and other outstanding results of late, ensured him of a PGA Tour card for the 2009 season.
“Nobody’s ever been happier to finish second,” said a grinning Bettencourt. “I reached my lifelong goal of making the PGA Tour.” He now ranks 12th on the Nationwide money list.
For the tournament, Bettencourt was 13th in putts per greens in regulation and 19th in putts per round, both significant improvements from his historical putting statistics.
“SuperStroke has made a world of difference for me, taking my hands out of the putting stroke,” he said after his win at the Oregon Classic. “It’s really changed my game.”
SuperStroke grips are available in the ProLine Series used by Bettencourt, which feature a softer surface, as well as the original Classic Series used by PGA Tour pro KJ Choi.
At more than an inch and half in diameter – twice that of a conventional putter grip – all SuperStroke grips “fill the hands,” so the tendency to squeeze too tightly is greatly reduced. In addition, the grip’s exclusive and patented, virtually taper-free design promotes even pressure in both the right and left hands, helping to maintain a square putter face. And by keeping the hands “quiet,” the SuperStroke eliminates most wrist action in the putting stroke.
SuperStroke is USGA- and R&A-conforming for regular play and installs in minutes on any putter without any messy adhesives.
