CAMBRIDGE, Mass., October 24, 2008 – The field is set for the third annual Handa Cup to be held December 4-6 at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida. The Handa Cup pits U.S.-born LPGA Legends professionals versus a team of World Legends professionals in an international match play competition.
Returning U.S. team captain and LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member Kathy Whitworth is poised to lead 12 players, including Beth Daniel and five more LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers, who will compete for a US three-peat at the Handa Cup.
Scotland’s Cathy Panton-Lewis will captain the 2008 Handa Cup World Team featuring newcomer Alison Nicholas who is perhaps best known for beating runner-up Nancy Lopez and three-peat hopeful Annika Sorenstam in the 1997 U.S. Women’s Open. The Handa Cup will be Alison’s first Legends Tour event.
Last year’s competition saw the World Team jump out to a 14-10 lead after first round play that included alternate shot and best ball team matches. The U.S. Team rallied in final round singles play to re-claim the Cup, 26-22, winning eight of the 12 matches on Sunday.
