Stanford Takes Second Place in 12-Team Field; Stanford’s Sihwan Kim Shoots Fourth Best Individual Score
SAN MARTIN, Calif. (November 5, 2008) – CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort proudly announces the results of its Fourth Annual CordeValle Collegiate Golf Tournament, held from November 3 – 5, 2008. With UCLA serving as the host team, some of the nation’s top collegiate golf programs competed in this year’s three-day tournament, with the team from the University of Southern California claiming the overall title.
The six-man Southern California team, consisting of Matthew Giles, Tom Glissmeyer, Steve Lim, Jamie Lovemark, Ryan Linton and Tim Sluiter, finished the tournament at even par with a commanding lead over second place Stanford, which finished at 26-over par. The team from the UCLA finished third at 27-over. The lowest overall individual score was posted by USC’s Tim Sluiter, at 4-under par, while Stanford’s Siwhan Kim finished tied for fourth at 2-under.
The 12 competing schools in this year’s Collegiate included: Arkansas, Arizona, Augusta State, Coastal Carolina, UNC Charlotte, Lamar, Northwestern, Santa Clara, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington. A number of standout collegiate players competed, such as UCLA’s Philip Francis, the pre-season coaches’ poll number-one ranked player, Lovemark, the 2007 NCAA individual champion from USC, and first-team All-American Kim from Stanford.
A total of 12 six-man teams (80 players total, with some teams fielding additional golfers on an individual basis) participated in the CordeValle Collegiate. This is the only NCAA collegiate golf event these teams play that uses a foursome format, pairing two players from one team with two players from another team. Representatives from the Northern California Golf Association officiated the match.
“The level of play that these collegiate golfers exhibited on the CordeValle course was exemplary, and we look forward to next year,” said CordeValle’s Director of Golf Operations Travis Skeesick. “We’ve hosted this event for four consecutive years, and this competition just becomes more exciting every year.”
Designed by internationally acclaimed course designer Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the 18-hole CordeValle course is characterized by strategically planted foliage and other elements that challenge the golfer’s ability. Jones has called the course at CordeValle one of the finest creations of his career. It measures 7,169 yards and will play as a par-72 course for the Collegiate.
Set on 270 acres of gently rolling terrain in a pastoral valley located approximately 25 miles southeast of San Jose in San Martin, California, CordeValle utilizes the natural elevation changes (150 feet over the 18-hole course) of its peaks and canyons, enhanced by broad meadows, streams, striking sycamore trees and mature California oaks. It demands numerous strategies and club selections throughout each round, due in part to its strategically-placed bunkers, challenging bays and other topographical twists.
