It was, in Matt Bettencourt’s words, “a dream come true” – his victory at this past weekend’s Nationwide Tour Championship, the $180,000 winner’s check, his finish as the tour’s leading money winner for 2008, and his automatic PGA Tour card for 2009.
And the fact that it required Bettencourt to drain a winning six-foot birdie putt on Sunday’s 72nd hole was all the more fitting for someone who has become the hottest player on the Nationwide Tour since he adopted the SuperStroke™ putter grip over the summer. In that time, Bettencourt has won twice, tied for first another time, and has posted consistently strong finishes week after week.
At the Nationwide Championship, played on the par-71 TPC Craig Ranch course in McKinney, Texas, Bettencourt ranked first in putts per greens in regulation and fourth in putts per round on his way to the winning 17-under-par 267 total.
“SuperStroke has made a world of difference for me, taking my hands out of the putting stroke,” he said.
SuperStroke grips are available in the ProLine Series used by Bettencourt, which feature a softer surface, as well as the original Classic Series used by PGA Tour pro KJ Choi.
At more than an inch and half in diameter – twice that of a conventional putter grip – all SuperStroke grips “fill the hands,” so the tendency to squeeze too tightly is greatly reduced. In addition, the grip’s exclusive and patented, virtually taper-free design promotes even pressure in both the right and left hands, helping to maintain a square putter face. And by keeping the hands “quiet,” the SuperStroke eliminates most wrist action in the putting stroke.
SuperStroke is USGA- and R&A-conforming for regular play and installs in minutes on any putter without any messy adhesives.
