November 2, 2008 – Tokyo, Japan – Armed with a Cyberstar NanoV driver & #3 wood and Cyberstar Forged Irons #2 – #9, PW, Yonex Tour Professional, Ryo Ishikawa shot a 3-under 69 in the final round of the Japan Golf Tour’s Mynavi ABC Championship in Kato, Japan to capture his second career Japan Golf Tour victory and first as a professional.
Ishikawa, shot to superstar status in Japan in May 2007 when he became the youngest winner of a Japan Golf Tour event when he won the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup as an amateur at 15 years and eight months.
Trailing Keiichiro Fukabori by three shots at the start of the final round, Ishikawa birdied the ABC Golf Club’s 4th and 5th holes on his way to a tie with Fukabori by the time he reached the 15th tee.
After rolling in consecutive birdies at the 15th and 16th, Ryo had built a 2-shot lead that he would not surrender.
Even when facing the toughest test of his young career, Ishikawa’s remarkable maturity and mental toughness helped him conquer the pressures that come with competing against the world’s best golfers.
“It was such a tough game of golf today, I wanted someone to help me, at times I felt like crying along the way,”” Ishikawa said. “But I decided not to cry until I won, believing that I would find something great in the end,”
“I was pretty nervous on the last few holes” he added. “I just tried to keep it together and hang on for the win.”
“I’ve never shaken so much as I did on that last putt, but I believed something good was going to happen today so it feels great.”
In route to his come-from-behind victory, Ryo shot rounds of 70 (-2), 70 (-2), 70 (-2), and 69 (-3) for a total score of nine under, which gave him a one shot victory. This victory moved Ryo to 6th on the Japan Golf Tour’s Money List and 129th in the World Golf Rankings.
