ORLANDO, Fla. – January 9, 2009…Marriott Golf, one of the world’s premier golf operators, today announced that Jaime Banuelos has received the 2008 Marriott Golf Grounds Scholarship, which is annually awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in a Turf Management related program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
Jaime, who completed his undergraduate degree in December 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Crop Production, is currently enrolled in the Masters program at the University of Arizona, where he is working towards his Master of Science degree in Soil, Water, and Environmental Science. As part of the scholarship requirement, Jaime completed an internship at Marriott Golf’s Starr Pass Country Club, in Tucson, Ariz., and still serves as a golf maintenance staff member at the facility. In this position, Jaime is responsible for various golf course maintenance tasks, which include course set-up, irrigation maintenance, and fertilization and chemical spraying.
In addition, Jaime also received a Certificate in Turfgrass Management from the University of California, Riverside, in November 2005 and is a Certified Pesticide Applicator from the Structural Pest Control Commission.
“It has been a pleasure having Jaime on our staff while he is attending the University of Arizona in pursuit of his degree in Turf Management,” said Mark Salisbury, Superintendent of Grounds for the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort. “He is very deserving of this scholarship.”
The Marriott Golf Grounds Scholarship is open to any student enrolled in a Turf Management related program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Program at the University of Arizona, with preference given to minority and female students. The only other requirement is that each candidate must have completed an internship at any one of Marriott Golf’s properties. The UA Foundation reviews and awards the scholarship on behalf of Marriott Golf.
