LAKE MARY, FL – Timacuan Golf & Country Club in north Orlando, for the fifth straight year, will host a PGA Pro-Pro Series tournament during the week of the annual PGA Merchandise Show. The 100-plus PGA professionals who compete will see a new and improving course and facility.
The Pro-Pro Series will visit this Ron Garl-designed course on Tuesday, January 27. The Pro-Pro Series is comprised of several events during PGA Show Week, and PGA golf professionals choose a tournament that fits their schedule or course preference. The PGA show, which attracts over 40,000 club professionals, equipment buyers, vendors, and other industry members at the Orange County Convention Center, is scheduled for Jan. 29-31.
“The exposure through the PGA Magazine network and the golf professionals who compete is an important ingredient in our marketing plan for 2009,” said Timacuan General Manager Tony Johnson. “We feel the PGA members from the north can serve as valuable ambassadors for our golf course to their club members who might be looking for a golf vacation destination. We are thrilled to be a part of the series for that reason, and we believe the PGA pros will be impressed with the golf experience here at Timacuan.”
Timacuan, purchased by Kitson & Partners in 2006, has been one of Central Florida’s most popular courses since opening in 1988. It has garnered many statewide awards, being ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida by The Florida Golf Reporter Magazine. The challenging par-4 second hole has been named the toughest hole in the region by Orlando Magazine.
Prior to starting work on the layout, Garl spent time in Scotland studying Links-style architecture, and the research is very evident on Timacuan’s front nine. Sprawling bunkers, generous landing areas, oversized, undulating greens, and framing mounds combine to create a challenging and memorable nine holes.
The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel, with beautiful oak trees and tall pines providing the framing. One large body of water comes into play on 15, 16 and 17, demanding accuracy. Nearly every green complex has closely-mown fringe areas, allowing for a variety of shot selections when players miss the green. And speaking of the greens, they are consistently among the best conditioned putting surfaces in Central Florida.
