JUPITER, Fla. – Strategic Shaft Technologies, LC, (SST) will unveil the latest advancement in golf shaft evaluation at the PGA Merchandise Show next week in Orlando, Fla. With the introduction of the PURE SPECS® fully automated Shaft PUREing and Qualification System, the industry will now have the most advanced shaft analysis system in the world.
“Our newest automated machine is the culmination of a decade of shaft analysis research both on the PGA Tour and with amateur golfers at all levels,” said SST founder Dick Weiss, who will introduce the new technology in a press conference scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, at 9:30 am in Room 312C of the Orange County Convention Center. The press conference will beimmediately followed by a live demonstration in SST Booth 2661.
The PURE SPECS analysis consists of readings for PURE alignment, torque, two tip deflection readings, shaft run-out (straightness), length to the millimeter, weight and more. The SST shaft printout that accompanies every shaft PURE analyzed has been updated to accommodate this new information and make it easier for players to understand the characteristics of any individual shaft. The result of the PURE SPECS analysis is that each shaft is measured in real time at actual playing length prior to club assembly. The entire process takes approximately 20 seconds to perform a host of shaft evaluations.
It was 10 years ago that Dick Weiss introduced his first state-of-the-art SST PURE® shaft alignment system. Over these past 10 years, SST has licensed its proprietary technology to more than 70 clubmaker licensees from around the world. To date, more than one million shafts have been PURE® aligned. Last year on the PGA Tour, over 140 players had their clubs PUREd and those players won a total in excess of a $138 million.
“The shaft is the golf club’s last technological frontier,” Weiss said. “Former USGA technical director Frank Thomas has said that there has been no appreciable enhancements in iron performance in over 7 years, especially since the USGA has mandated the maximum specifications of drivers in face size, face hardness, shaft length and MOI. That leaves one area open for analysis and improvement – the shaft.”
Using proprietary computer software and sensitive data-acquisition sensors, the SST PURE® shaft alignment process analyzes the structural irregularities that exist to some degree in every golf shaft and locates the shaft’s most stable orientation. By assembling the club with the shaft in its SST PURE® orientation, off-line bending and twisting of the shaft are minimized and impact repeatability on the center of the clubface by the golfer improves by up to 51 percent. The process can be performed on existing clubs, new clubs or new shafts – steel or graphite – from all major manufacturers. SST PURE has also been named one of golf’s all-time Top 25 equipment developments by Golf International Magazine.
