Wintergreen Resort to host programs starting in spring

WINTERGREEN, Va. Feb. 2, 2009 – Stoney Creek Golf Course, home to the Wintergreen Resort Golf Academy, has expanded its dedication to junior golf by becoming an affiliate site for The First Tee of Charlottesville.

Starting April 11, the golf staff of Wintergreen Resort will manage year-round programs for boys and girls, ages 12 and older, at Stoney Creek’s expansive practice facility and also provide on-course instruction on the Rees Jones championship design.

During April and May, sessions are to be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; from June through August, sessions are to be held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Programs are designed by The First Tee, which is a national organization providing golf learning facilities and general educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship to young people of all backgrounds.

One of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier year-round golf destinations and a popular family-friendly getaway, Wintergreen Resort is an ideal setting for The First Tee programs. Participants will enjoy the relaxing atmosphere “at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains,” which for many years has showcased golf, snowsports, tennis and numerous other outdoor activities.

“There are so many things already in place for kids at the golf course and throughout the resort,” said Sean Taylor, director of golf at Wintergreen. “Golf is much more than just a game and through The First Tee programs we really do have a chance to impact lives. Our staff and volunteers will focus on the positive aspects of our programs and emphasize the core values of The First Tee. We look forward to teaming up with all the boys and girls in The First Tee of Charlottesville.”

Registration for The First Tee programs at Wintergreen Resort will be accepted starting March 2 through The First Tee of Charlottesville, which became an official chapter in 2004 and has served more than 1,000 boys and girls in the area. For registration and more details, visit www.thefirstteecharlottesville.org or call (434) 970-3045.
