ORLANDO – Winners were announced and presented in 13 categories Thursday in the 16th Annual ING Media Awards. The presentations were made from ClubING at the PGA Merchandise Show at the Orange Country Center. Fairways + Greens magazine contributors led the way with six awards, followed by Golfweek with five and The Met Golfer magazine with four.
The International Network Of Golf is a 19-year-old, non-profit, media-based networking organization whose mission is to enhance and promote communication and education in golf. The group conducts two meetings each year in the spring and fall, when media and industry leaders gather to discuss issues, launch and test new products, and develop relationships.
Each category of the ING Media Awards program has a category chair, responsible for selecting three independent judges for the category. Entries are stripped of identification prior to being sent to the category chairs and judges. Fairways + Greens, regional publication based in Reno, NV, took home three first-place awards. Vic Williams was tops in the Competition Writing category with his story about Tiger Woods’ triumph in the U.S. Open entitled “Tiger: Quiet After The Storm.” That same Open played a role in many of the winning entries including the top photograph by Joann Dost of Tiger Woods, published in Fairways + Greens. F+G’s other first-place winner was Calder Chism in the Illustration category. Williams also received an “Outstanding Achiever” award in the travel category, as did F+G’s Darin Bunch.
Golfweek’s first-place winners were Jeff Rude in profiles for his story “Country Pride Moves Kenny Perry,” and Adam Schupak in the business writing category for “USGA: Beyond The Crossroad.” Both Rude and Schupak won Outstanding Achiever honors in other categories as well. Other multiple honorees were: Steven Gribin, Michael Hiller, Bob Seligman and Bob Skura.
The ING Media Awards program sponsors were Explanar, Johnson & Wales University, Player’s Pass, Sunbuster/Gustbuster and Zelocity. Todd Lewis of The Golf Channel was the master of ceremonies. The ING’s next gathering is the 19th Annual ING Spring Conference, set for May 17-21 at French Lick Resort in Indiana. For details, visit www.inggolf.com, or call 407-328-0500.
