(Londonderry, New Hampshire) – Renowned Danish shoemaker ECCO announces that staff player Colin Montgomerie has been selected as European team captain for the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Wales.
Montgomerie, who wears ECCO World Class GTX golf shoes and displays the brand’s logo on his shirt, played in eight Ryder Cups between 1991 and 2006. In those competitions, the Scotsman compiled a record of 20 wins, nine losses and seven halves and never lost a singles match. At age 47 when the competition starts, he will be Europe’s youngest-ever captain.
“It became obvious in the past couple of weeks discussing with the senior players who will be the nucleus of the team that it was my time,” said Montgomerie. “I am very proud and honored to take this role on. What comes with that is a huge responsibility as well. I have a task now to select the player’s necessary to win back the Ryder Cup on home soil at Wales.”
Since turning professional in 1987, Montgomerie has established an incredible international career highlighted by 31 European Tour victories and eight European Order of Merit crowns, including an unprecedented seven-straight from 1993 to 1999.
