HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (February 9, 2009) – Cleveland Golf/Srixon is pleased to announce that Srixon staffer Henry “Sonny” Skinner Jr. was named the 2008 PGA Professional Player of the Year by the PGA of America and was honored at the 2009 PGA Merchandise Show.
Skinner, 48, a PGA teaching professional at River Pointe Golf Club in Albany, Ga., is the first Georgia PGA Section member and the third consecutive Srixon staffer to earn the prestigious award following back-to-back PGA Player of the Year honors awarded fellow Srixon staffer Mike Small in 2006 and 2007.
“I became a Cleveland Golf/Srixon staff player two years ago and I saw an immediate improvement in my golf game,” said Skinner. “With the new Z-STAR golf ball and Cleveland wedges in my bag, I truly feel confident hitting any shot that I attempt and I’m looking forward to playing their products for many years to come.”
Skinner, a native of Portsmouth, Va., began golfing at the age of 12 and competed on the Canadian PGA Tour in 1989. He successfully completed PGA Tour Qualifying School in the fall of 1989 and continued to play on the PGA and Nationwide Tours for 14 consecutive seasons, which included four seasons on the PGA Tour (1990, ’92, ’97, and ’98). Skinner won two events on the Nationwide Tour (Nike Tour) in 1993 and 1994, and his 280 starts are the fifth most in that tour’s history. In the fall of 1991, Skinner returned to PGA of America Business Schools to complete the final requirements for membership in The PGA of America and was subsequently elected to PGA membership in January 1992. In January 2008, he became PGA director of golf at River Pointe Golf Club, where he has served as teaching professional since October 2008.
