Twenty Awards Ties Company Record
NEW YORK, NY-The results of the 2009 Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA) writing contest have been announced, and Golf Digest Publications received 20 awards across its multiple properties, the most of any publication group and tied for the most in company history.
Of the 20 awards, four were first-place finishes. John Barton, Golf Digest International Editor-in-Chief, was the recipient of two first-place awards and was one of only three writers in the industry to claim a double win. Barton was honored in both the Internet Features category and the Non-Daily Special Projects category for pieces he wrote for GolfDigest.com and Golf Digest, respectively (“The Interview Room,” which examined the relationship between golfers and the press at Augusta National, and “Golf in the Year of the Rat,” which focused on golf in China, were the winning articles).
Jaime Diaz, senior writer for both Golf Digest and Golf World, received a first-place award in the Non-Daily News category. The award was Diaz’s fifth career win and it was given to him for his piece, “The Odd Couple,” which discussed the relationship between Paul Azinger and Nick Faldo and first appeared in the September 2008 issue of Golf Digest.
The fourth first-place award came in the Non-Daily Features category and was given to Golf World contributing writer Jim Moriarty for his article on Tour pro Erik Compton. Titled “Change of Heart,” the piece was first published in the September 5, 2008 issue of Golf World and it offered an in-depth look at the golfer as he recovered from his second heart transplant. The win was Moriarty’s second of his career.
The breakdown of awards is as follows: Golf Digest, 7; Golf World, 8; GolfDigest.com, 3; GolfWorld.com, 2. This is the first year that GolfWorld.com has been evaluated separately from GolfDigest.com.
Since 1994, Golf Digest Publications has received a total of 190 GWAA awards
