BASKING RIDGE, N.J., April 6, 2009…New Jersey National Golf Club, a private 18-hole Championship Golf Course located in Basking Ridge, N.J., recently announced that it has achieved certification through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, becoming the 21st golf course in New Jersey to become Audubon Certified.
Since 2003, New Jersey National has worked closely with the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program to demonstrate that it maintained the highest degree of environmental quality in several areas including Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Water Conservation, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Outreach and Education and Water Quality Management. Through these areas, New Jersey National completed several projects to demonstrate that the club practices the highest environmental standards.
As part of the property’s environmental stewardship efforts, New Jersey National has implemented a variety of programs, highlighted by building and hanging bluebird nesting boxes throughout the course, listing wildlife species living on the property and installing wetland conservation signs throughout the property. Additionally, new programs were implemented to reduce the use of energy, pesticides, fertilizers, gas and labor, ultimately making the property more efficient with its chemical and water output.
“New Jersey National Golf Club is committed to promoting environmental stewardship, and we are thrilled to be recognized as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” said Pierre Bohemond, General Manager, New Jersey National Golf Club. “Achieving Audubon Certification has been a rewarding experience, and we look forward to implementing new programs at the club that serve to protect the environment.”
The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses is a cooperative effort between Audubon International and the United States Golf Association. The program is an award-winning education and certification program for golf courses that promotes environmentally sound land management and the conservation of natural resources.
New Jersey National’s Golf Course Superintendent, Brad Fox, a Class “A” member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), and First Assistant Superintendent, Rob Schipper, were both instrumental in helping the club achieve certification.
