Century Old Donald Ross Gem Opens to Public
April 21, 2009-CHICAGO-Golf Chicago Magazine features the oldest “new” public golf course in the Chicago market on the cover and inside its April issue. Opened in 1901 and re-designed by Donald Ross from 1917-1919, Ravisloe Country Club is not only one of the oldest courses in all of Chicagoland but a very well-respected private club located in the south suburbs.
Writer Neal Kotlarek reports that with mounting debt, a down spiraling economy and a declining number of members, the club was sold to veterinarian Claude Gendreau for $3.5 million in late February. Ravisloe’s location is unique because three other high profile private clubs are within a stone’s throw of its entrance-Idlewild CC, Flossmoor CC and nationally renown Olympia Fields.
“In one sense it’s a sad reflection of how low our economy is sinking that we can lose a private course with Ravisloe’s stature,” notes Kotlarek. “On the other hand, for Mr. Gendreau to purchase the property and keep its legacy alive by allowing the public to enjoy a true Chicago Gem, well that is really a silver lining to this story.”
