John Shapcott Named Head Professional at Meadowlands CC

April 29, 2009

BLUE BELL, Pa. (April 27, 2009) – Meadowlands Country Club, the private country club which features the 58-year-old William and David Gordon-designed course, has named John Shapcott as its new head golf professional.

Shapcott replaced the well-respected husband-and-wife team of Paul and Jennifer Barnsley, recently named to a similar position in Connecticut.

For the past 12 years, seven years as first assistant, Shapcott has worked under the tutelage of Mickey Sokalski at Philmont CC, a 36-hole facility in Montgomery County, on the outskirts of Philadelphia. Sokalski is one of the most respected head professionals in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Shapcott comes into a favorable situation, where the Barnsleys and Meadowlands greatly upgraded the instructional program at the club with the addition of an indoor instructional facility in 2007. Combined with an outstanding range and a short game practice facility, it positions Meadowlands as one of the top clubs for instruction in the area.

In addition, Shapcott joins one of the rare clubs in the area that has seen membership increase in recent years. An emphasis on positioning Meadowlands as the ultimate family country club has been pinpointed as a major factor in this development, which bucks the national trend. Shapcott, again, would seem perfectly suited to mesh with this image. He and his wife, Jennifer, have five children, ranging in age from 13 years to three months.

“This was a perfect opportunity for me,” said Shapcott, who immediately went about the task of building an experienced staff. “The opportunity to teach is second-to-none in the area. The club is vibrant and solid. And the family atmosphere is a pleasure to be a part of.”

Meadowlands CC is a private country club on the outskirts of Philadelphia, in the golf-rich Montgomery County. It is situated on 128 acres, amidst some of the prime real estate available in Pennsylvania. The club has resisted overtures from developers and underscored its commitment to creating the finest family-friendly country club with the extensive renovation of the golf course as well as the magnificent Georgian-style clubhouse.
