Alexandria, VA – April 29, 2009 – Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) is joining with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and other organizations and companies to increase public awareness of the importance of workplace safety and health during the May 3 – 9, 2009, North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The national kick-off will take place Monday, May 4 at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Capitol while other events will take place across the country and worldwide.
Annually, more than 5,000 people die on the job and four million more suffer from on-the-job illnesses and injuries. NAOSH Week is another way to increase the understanding of the benefits of investing in occupational safety and health; to raise awareness of the role and contribution of safety and health practitioners; and, to reduce workplace injuries and illness by encouraging new workplace safety and health initiatives. The theme of this year’s NAOSH week is “Making Sure Workers Come Home Safely.”
CMAA Chief Executive Officer Jim Singerling, CCM, CEC, explains, “We are delighted to support this awareness initiative and continue to promote healthy work environments in the club industry. CMAA member-managed clubs employ more than 289,000 people nationwide, and these clubs recognize the value in protecting their greatest assets – their employees.”
Organizations that will be supporting NAOSH Week along with CMAA, ASSE, OSHA and CSSE include the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the American Heart Association (AHA), the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the National Safety Council (NSC) and the Association of Occupational Health Professionals (AOHP). These organizations will be involved in a variety of activities during the annual NAOSH Week including holding events and distributing key information to their members and in their communities worldwide as they join with ASSE, OSHA and CSSE in raising awareness of workplace safety risks and solutions.
