Ross course moves up to #7 in the State and #2 among public courses in Indiana

French Lick, IN – The historic Donald Ross course at French Lick Resort in southern Indiana has been selected among Golf Digest Magazine’s Best in State for the state of Indiana. The historic layout was listed #7 overall and #2 among public courses in Indiana.

The publication’s annual review of America’s Best New Courses appeared in the January 2009 issue where they broke down the best new courses in the country and the best courses in each state.

Golf Digest’s annual survey of America’s Best New Courses and Best in State Courses is conducted by a panel of 800 golfers. Panelists rate courses based on shot values, design variety, resistance to scoring, memorability, and aesthetics.

The Ross course ranks behind only Prairie View G.C. in Indianapolis. The top five courses on the list are private facilities.

Originally constructed in 1917 by world-renowned architect Donald Ross, the legendary Ross course at French Lick Resort has been home to many regional and national tournaments including the 1924 PGA Championship won byWalter Hagen.

“This is a great honor for a wonderful and historic golf course to be rated among the top two public courses in Indiana”, said Dave Harner-Director of Golf Operations for French Lick Resort. “This has been a very special project, restoring this legendary course back to its original Ross design. The positive response from the industry to the newly restored layout has been overwhelming and exciting as we believe the course will continue to improve on its rankings over time.”

French Lick Resort invested $4.6 million dollars into the restoration project working closely with the design firm of Schmidt-Curley and Michael Fay of the Donald Ross Society to preserve the historical integrity of the course. The project included utilizing old photos of the course to return 35 original Bunkers all featuring the Ross trademark flat bottoms and deep, gnarly faces as well as adding new sand and tile to existing bunkers. In addition, green complexes where enlarged to their original shapes, a new state of the art irrigation system installed, as well as new teeing areas lengthening the course to over 7,000 yards.
