The Marbella Club Golf and Country Club, the Alferini Golf Club at Gran Flamingos and the Rio Real Golf and Country Club–will host the 15th annual World Golfers Championship Oct. 24-31 in Marbella, Spain. A fourth course will be named later.
Sven Tumba of Sweden, who founded the tournament in 1995, made the announcement at a press conference recently at the Marbella Club Hotel, which will serve as the tournament headquarters.
The event was held at the PGA National Resort and Spa for the first three years and then moved to the Doral Resort in Miami, Hyatt Regency Grand Champions, Desert Willow and Indian Wells in Palm Springs, Disney World and Grand Cypress in Orlando, La Romana and Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, Royal Cliff Beach Resort in Thailand, Gloria Golf Resort in Turkey, KwaZula-Natal at Wild Coast Sun and Port Shepstone in South Africa and Glenmarie, Templer Park and Tropicana in Malaysia.
Amateurs from up to 30 countries are expected to compete in the 72-hole tournament as five-person teams and individually in five handicap flights-0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25. Go to www.worldgolfers.com for more information.
The USA team will be decided in a 36-hole competition Sept. 12-13 on the El Campeon (The Champions) and the Las Colinas (The Hills) courses at Mission Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL, the site of the 2008 world finals. Clubs and tournament directors are encouraged to hold qualifying tournaments between now and August to determine five-person teams to advance to the Florida event. Entry fee is $600 per team.
