Orinda, Calif.-The Northern California Superintendent-Professional Tournament is slated for Monday, May 18, 2009 at Orinda Country Club. The event will pair a golf course superintendent with a golf professional partner from the same facility.
Prior to teeing it up on the Willie Watson-designed course, players will attend a presentation given by Chaplain Corbin L. Cherry, U.S. Army Retired. A military chaplain during the Vietnam War, Cherry lost his leg to a landmine in the A Shau Valley near Hue. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. A highly decorated chaplain, he retired in 2003 as chief of the chaplain service at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. His previous appointments included chief of chaplain service at VA Central Office in Washington, D.C., chaplain at Walter Reed Army Hospital and Letterman Army Hospital at San Francisco’s Presidio.
Today, Cherry spends his time garnering support for the Vietnamese Children’s Wheelchair and Prosthetics Group, which provides children and adults throughout Vietnam with avenues for better mobility and self-advancement. “I am looking forward to meeting Chaplain Corbin Cherry, a gentleman who has made positive change in the world through his military service as well as through his humanitarian efforts,” states GCSANC President Chris Mains. “As our keynote speaker, I am confident that his presentation will be both interesting and inspirational.”
PGA Host Professional Shim LaGoy and GCSANC Host Superintendent Robert “Bob” Lapic at Orinda Country Club, anticipate a field of 100 players comprised of fifty, two-person teams. “The Superintendent-Professional Tournament is always held at a premier course in Northern California which makes the rich-in-tradition Orinda Country Club an ideal venue for this year’s event,” states Glenn Matthews, GCSANC event committee chair. “Host Superintendent Bob Lapic has a reputation for providing a challenging and meticulously maintained venue, one that participants will enjoy not only from a players point of view but from agronomic and design perspectives, as well.”
