(Augusta, MI) After 14 seasons as head golf professional at Gull Lake Country Club, Mike Sullivan is excited about the future in launching the new Kendall/Sullivan Golf Academy at Gull Lake View Golf Club & Resort in Augusta. “This is a fantastic opportunity because it involves partnering with such outstanding people as the Scott family and Dave Kendall,” said Sullivan. The Scott family is one of the most respected golf names in Michigan for its five 18-hole championship courses including Bedford Valley, Gull Lake View East & West, and Stonehedge North & South. Kendall is the founder of Kendall Golf Academy based in Ypsilanti andGrand Rapids which boasts five of the top 17 teachers in the state as ranked by Golf Digest.
Located at Stonehedge, the new Kendall/Sullivan Academy will offer a comprehensive instructional program “Our goal is to become the premier golf academy for southwest Michigan offering an array of services from individual and group lessons to clinics and golf schools,” said Sullivan.
“Knowing Mike for a long time and admiring his teaching expertise, we’re very pleased to partner with him and the Kendall Academy,” said Jim Scott of Gull Lake View. “There’s tremendous potential for a quality instructional program for this area.” Echoing those sentiments was Dave Kendall, who’s also the President of the Michigan Section of the PGA. “Having someone of Mike’s reputation and experience be a part of both Kendall Academy and Gull Lake View is an unbeatable combination,” said Kendall. “People always make the difference in any golf endeavor and Mike Sullivan is a difference maker.”
Sullivan’s golf experience goes back over 25 years. In fact, he started his career as an assistant professional under Kendall at Cadillac Country Club in 1985. After two years in Cadillac, Sullivan worked at the prestigious North Shore CC in Glenview, Ill., under noted PGA club pro Bill Ogden who served the membership for 47 years. From North Shore he went on to become Head Golf Professional at Dubuque Golf & Country Club in Iowa and later in the same capacity for Gull Lake CC. It was at Gull Lake that Sullivan met and worked with nationally acclaimed instructor Mike Bender and where he honed his teaching skills and philosophy.
“My core value as a teacher is having my students understand the cause and effect of the golf swing so they can control their ball flight,” said Sullivan. “And I like to teach the game from the green backwards, emphasizing the short game where most shots are taken and often wasted.”
