The Swedish golf-clothing brand, Abacus, has been commissioned again to dress Europe’s Solheim Cup team following its great success in 2007.
“The competition is scheduled to be played in Chicago in August 2009 and will be the first introduction into the American market for us,” says the company’s Managing Director, Sven-Olof Karlsson. Abacus sponsored the European Solheim Cup team at Tylösand, Sweden last year.
“It was fantastic to see how the European team players kept their Abacus rain jackets on, while the opposition played in sweaters, sheltered under umbrellas, and this is exactly why our rain jackets were appreciated so much by the European players. Plus, Abacus won the functional clothing award at the Golf Europe Show in Munich in 2007. That’s further proof that Abacus rain gear is second to none,” says Karlsson.
The contract for continued collaboration between Abacus and the European Solheim Cup team was agreed on in the summer of 2008. In brief, it means that Abacus will clothe the European players, their caddies, members of the board, the players’ guests, and the team’s dignitaries during the competition week.
The new captain for the European team, Alison Nicholas, and the Ladies European Tour visited Abacus in Dalby, Sweden just before Christmas last year. The reason for the visit was to go over their experiences with Abacus gear from 2007 and to prepare for the new collection. The new team captain has in one way or another been a part of all The Solheim Cup competitions. She sees the role of captain as a great honor and, according to Nicholas, her mission is quite simply, “to create an environment that makes it possible for the players to perform their absolute best and hopefully to win. The clothes are an important ingredient in the recipe for success. Abacus did a splendid job last time and the clothes worked extremely well.”
Alison adds, “Obviously the most important thing is that the clothes work, that they are comfortable and well-fitting. But one shouldn’t underestimate the importance of the garments being good looking. If you look good, you feel good!”
