KNOLLWOOD COUNTRY CLUB RAISES $180,000 FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER FOUNDATION
Elmsford, New York – Knollwood Country Club in Elmsford, New York, recently hosted a golf tournament and dinner gala to benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF). Through donations, sponsorships, entry fees, as well as live and silent auction proceeds, the club raised more than $180,000 to help find a cure for childhood cancer at the September 8th event.
“Raising more than $180,000 for PCF was a total team effort,” said Knollwood Country Club member and committee chairman Philip Vallone. “We had Knollwood members, local restaurants and distributors, Knollwood associates and event companies all step up to help make this day a success. It’s important to note that between 93 and 94 percent of the funds raised through this event will go towards research and finding a cure for childhood cancer.”
The event took on special meaning for Vallone, whose grandson, Giovanni was diagnosed with cancer when he was a baby. “We’re fortunate he’s in remission now, but we hold our breath every time he goes for a check-up,” added Vallone.
Philadelphia 76ers forward Robert Covington joined 72 members and non-members for the afternoon golf tournament, while more than 150 guests, including Covington, attended the dinner gala. The golf course and banquet facilities were donated by Knollwood Country Club, while food was donated by local restaurants and beverages were provided by various liquor wholesalers.
“It is incredible to see how the community came together for this wonderful event and worthwhile cause,” said Greg Kinney, general manager, Knollwood Country Club. “Donations came pouring in from so many individuals and businesses.”
The 124 year-old club hosts numerous charity golf tournaments and events annually, while also choosing a benefiting charity for their own end-of-the-season event. In 2018, the Pediatric Cancer Foundation was selected by the Knollwood Board. In 2017, the club raised $85,000 for the Columbia University Medical Center for research and care of pediatric cancer and blood disorders.
About Knollwood Country Club
Knollwood Country Club is located in renowned Westchester County. The 18-hole golf course was completed in 1894, making it the oldest private club still in its original location in the United States. Knollwood was also one of the first 15 clubs to join the USGA and iconic golfers frequented the club, including Francis Ouimet and Bobby Jones. The original golf course was designed by Lawrence Van Etten. In 1924, the club hired A.W. Tillinghast to expand the golf course. At Tillinghast’s direction, the club purchased an additional 50 acres of adjacent land which was ultimately redesigned by Seth Raynor to add approximately 1,000 yards in length. Raynor passed away before the course was completed, so Charles Banks finished the project. The present-day course will play 6,552 yards from the championship tees. Knollwood’s 18th hole has been named to Met Golfer’s “Dream 18” as one of the finest holes in the greater New York area. The current 9th green remains from Van Etten’s earliest course.
