(CARMEL, CA) The Shivas Irons Society announced today that the public is invited to its annual Midwest celebration of golf – “Playing the Game With All Your Heart” – to be held for the fourth consecutive year at Wisconsin’s Erin Hills Golf Course, the venue for the 2011 US Amateur Championship.
The tourney will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2009 and will be a Pro-Am format with each participant paired (via a blind draw) with a player in Saturday’s round at the British Senior Open being held concurrently at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire England. This is an interesting and fun format where SIS members will be competing for possession of the Society’s version of the “Claret Jug.” This striking trophy will be engraved with the winner’s name and kept on permanent display at the beautiful Erin Hills clubhouse.
Steve Cohen, President of the Shivas Irons Society said, “Erin Hills is a perfect place to celebrate the spirit of Shivas and the Shivas Irons Society.” He noted, “The course was inspired by the classic courses of Scotland and Ireland and was designed and built in complete harmony with the natural environment… Even the motto of the course, ‘Golf is a journey…’ reflects the philosophy of the Society.” Cohen points out that it was Shivas Irons, the protagonist in Michael Murphy’s novel Golf in the Kingdom, who says:
“A round of golf partakes of the journey, and the journey is one of the central myths and signs of Western man… [and] if it is a journey, it is also a round: it always leads back to the place you started from . . . golf is always a trip back to the first tee, the more you play the more you realize you are staying where you are… By playing golf, you reenact that secret journey. You may even get to enjoy it.”
This special event is open to the public as well as members of the Shivas Irons Society and their guests. Proceeds gEvent registration and membership in the Society are available at their website at www.shivas.org.
