LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The 2009 Cleveland Golf Pro-Scratch Hosted by Angel Park Golf Club will take place Sunday, July 12 and Monday, July 13. The format will be a two-person better ball with each team comprised of one professional and one “scratch” amateur competing for a total prize purse of more than $17,000.
“When we first created this event over a decade ago, we had no idea that it would develop into such a popular event,” said Kris Strauss, Director of Sales and Marketing for OB Sports Golf Management. “But with the help of our generous sponsors (Cleveland Golf, Club Car, The Bellagio, Grey Goose, and Southern Wine and Spirits) the event has really taken off as of late, mainly because of the event’s friendly vibe that allows participants to relax and enjoy the game, enjoy Las Vegas all while playing for a substantial purse.
The 2008 Cleveland Golf Pro-Scratch came down to two teams. But it was the team of Nick Becker and Kevin Tassistro, both Las Vegas residents that edged out the team of Kenny Ebalo and Eric Nilsson on the second sudden-death playoff hole to take top honors. For their efforts, Becker, the professional on the team, earned $2,500 in cash and Tassistro earned $750 in Angel Park gift certificates. At the end of regulation play (two rounds of one best ball of two), both teams carded a 13-under-par 129 (Becker/Tassistro shot 64, 65 and Ebalo/Nilsson shot 63, 66).
This event draws teams of golf professionals and amateurs from all over the country as teams travel from California, Arizona, Washington and as far away as Hawaii and Mississippi to compete. Notable local pros such as Robert Gamez, Jeremy Anderson and Ed Fryatt have also played in the past.
The teams will compete for cash, gift certificates and hole-in-one prizes throughout the two-day event. There is also an optional team skins competition at a cost of $20 per team – the skins will be distributed upon completion of each round. Following the first round of play, the “Cloud Nine Derby Shoot” will kick-off. The field is limited to the top 15 teams that prepaid at registration prior to the first round. This fun filled “event within the event” is part of local lore as the 1996 Cloud Nine Derby featured an exciting hole-in-one by local touring professional Robert Gamez on the first hole. Teams that don’t qualify will be placed in a separate purse for payout based on the results of the second round.
The team entry fee is $350 and it includes green fees, golf cart, unlimited practice balls, lunch following the first round, continental breakfast prior to final round, BBQ afterwards, awards ceremony and a tee gift.
