Peter Compton to be Honored as Father of the Year at Weekend Tournament
ORLANDO, Fla., (June 17, 2009) – Golfweek magazine will host its 26th annual Father & Son Open this Father’s Day weekend (June 19-21) at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The event – which is open to amateur and professional golfers of all ages – has been a tradition since 1983, gathering players for both friendly sport and the presentation of the Father of the Year award.
“Year after year, the Father & Son Open continues to be one of Golfweek’s most popular events,” said Armand Cimaroli, Golfweek’s director of events. “The tournament is successful not only because of the challenging venues, but also because of the opportunity it provides for families to come together and compete.”
The tournament offers a two-man, 36-hole Modified Chapman (alternate shot) format and will be played on The Champion and Palmer courses at PGA National, which is home to the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) and the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic. The field will be divided into flights according to combined handicaps, and prizes will be awarded to the top teams in each flight.
In conjunction with the competition, Golfweek will also present its 2009 Father of the Year award, an annual honor given to a father who has made an ongoing commitment and contribution to the game. This year’s award goes to Peter Compton, who played a pivotal role in his son Erik’s successful golf career. Compton urged his son to take up the game when Erik was diagnosed with a heart condition at age 9, preventing him from playing contact sports. Erik went on to become one of Golfweek’s top-ranked amateur golfers, turned pro in 2001 and, following a second heart transplant in May 2008, was accepted into the PGA Tour’s Children’s Miracle Network Classic. With this award, Compton will join a long line of noteworthy Father of the Year honorees, including Earl Woods, Ken Morton Sr., Merle Harting and Robert Nye.
