Bellingham, Washington – June 18, 2009 – Some of the big names in golf are not at Bethpage Black this week because they could not meet U.S. Open qualifications, but Aerotech SteelFiber shafts will be in play at one of the game’s most revered events – the 2009 U.S. Open. A former United States Men’s Amateur Golf Champion and two-time, first-team All-American for Georgia Tech played Bridgestone irons fit with Aerotech SteelFiber i95 taper tip constant weight shafts to tie for Medalist Honors at the 2009 U.S. Open Qualifier in Ball Ground, Ga.
The nine-year PGA veteran shot a bogey-free 66 in his first round at Hawks Ridge Golf Club and then a one-bogey 68 in the second round to finish tied for Medalist honors at 10-under par. Two weeks earlier, he played Aerotech shafts and won the 2009 British Open Qualifier held at the Queens Course at Gleneagles Country Club in Austin, Texas. He shot 63, 66 (-13) to win by two strokes and earn his fifth trip to the British Open.
“We are very excited to be at the 2009 U.S. Open this year,” says Chris Hilleary, president of Aerotech Golf. “The U.S. Open qualifying system invokes a truly American ideal, one in which any person regardless of background or experience can earn the right to play in the U.S. Open. The idea that anyone on any given day can live a dream by playing in the U.S. Open makes this event incredibly unique from the other majors.”
Hilleary explains that winning a PGA TOUR event does not automatically give a player entry to the U.S. Open. According to U.S. Golf Association rules, a player must win two events between championships to earn a spot in the field or else ascend to the Open via the qualifying system.
“Our SteelFiber designs feature a very unique composite technology,” adds Hilleary. “While graphite shafts produce greater vibration dampening and lighter shaft weights which mean greater swing speed with less effort and fatigue, steel shafts tend to be more consistent and controllable. Aerotech SteelFiber shafts bring both of these materials together seamlessly to create a perfect blend of power and stability and we fully expect to see more requests for this shaft from all levels of tournament players.”
Delivering the power of graphite and the stability of steel on professional tours, SteelFiber shafts feature a high-modulus graphite core and nearly 60 miles of steel fiber covering the surface of each shaft, providing golfers with the power of graphite and the stability of steel. While the shaft’s graphite core provides vibration dampening, increased clubhead speed and maximum distance, the steel fibers produce a optimum weighting for a solid feel at impact and add stability and control for pinpoint accuracy. Originally developed for irons the SteelFiber technology now enhances the performance of hybrids, fairway woods and drivers.
