“This Is A Special Club I Made Myself”
Yesterday, Phil Mickelson hit a hybrid shot no fan had ever seen before. He basically hit a flop shot with a hybrid…almost impossible to do because the trailing edge is never set-up for this on a hybrid design. But with the high rough at the U.S. Open lurking in Phil’s thoughts…he thought he should meet with Roger Cleveland (Head Designer at Callaway) to come up with a prototype hybrid to get him through the weekend.
QUOTES:
“Phil really led the design process,” Colton said. “He told us what he wanted to see and the type of functionality he wanted, and our designers translated that. From sketch to wax to finished product he’s been involved. He’s seen it in all the different stages of design and development. In fact, we made modifications to the original prototype that we had because we had it in wax. He played around with it, looked at it and had some suggestions and those modifications were taken into account.”
“It’s a good example of how we listen to the tour players,” Colton said. “There are no plans to commercialize this product, but we might given the way it performed this week with Phil. We still have some learning to do about who it is best for and how it behaves … We plan to build a broader set of prototypes that we will do more testing with.”
As you can see from the image…the entire back half of the hybrid has been removed to allow for a more graceful entry into deep rough. He actually hit a flop shot with it yesterday from 164 yards out…he opened up the face like he would a wedge and launched a moon rocket that landed within 20 feet of the pin.
Not even some high-ups at Callaway knew anything about this one. Last week we started putting some calls and emails into our sources at Callaway…although they all said they knew nothing about this one…they commented that MyGolfSpy knew more then they did on this Mickelson hybrid design. So no details on specs or whether or not this might make it to stores…sorry guys.
