Hello golf stakeholders:
St. Patrick’s Day lies ahead and, for many of the northern geographies, they’ll be unusually open and likely serving green beer for post-round golfers. This is shaping up to mimic the ‘12 season-opening weather which ushered in a double-digit increase in GPH and a 6% increase in rounds played vs. ’11. We have the full-year GPH forecast but…you gotta’ pay to see those cards (see last sentence below).
Contributing Editor Stuart Lindsay leads this month with an analogy of the broader golf market in ’24 as a 3-ring circus. He puts taming the inflationary lions and tigers in the center ring as pricing power wanes but the continued rising costs, which operators previously covered with price increases, will need to be “fed”. To keep the topline growing, he posits that operators will now have to better manage their tee sheet and customer development to get more revenue-per-golfer which likely takes us back to…winning the battle for share-of-golfer which was the path to success in the ’05-‘19 era.
Publisher Jim K. outlines a significant development in the golf information and insights space that he’s betting 90%+ of you don’t even know about even though it was announced during (not at) the PGA Merchandise Show week. Golf Datatech was acquired by a large, non-golf information company called Circana and it has the potential to accelerate the breadth, consistency, speed and rigor of information in general in the industry. We don’t yet know the path but it will make life more interesting in our little corner of the world.
