A Tiger Shark Optix putter showed up in the bag of one of the best professional golfers in the world last week at the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond Golf Club, propelling the two-time major winner to an 11-under par T6th place finish. It seems the tour version of the Optix putter will also be the South African’s putter of choice for next week’s British Open.
The current 23rd ranked player in the world had the Tiger Shark putter for a year and a half and has been searching for an answer to help him line up the ball better after complications from laser eye surgery. The aptly named Optix putter is designed with a unique alignment system that features a white bar that helps the golfer position the putter against the golf ball for a visible alignment. The putter also has the ability to be professionally marked with three orange lines for a more precise alignment. After marking the ball with the USGA conforming Line M Up tool, the Optix sights can be aligned with the ball markings to help golfers zero in on the perfect spot on the golf ball.
“We built an Optix for him in Atlanta last year,” said Tiger Shark president Dean Dingman. “We weren’t sure if it was ours right away until the announcers mentioned the Optix putter by Tiger Shark on air Saturday. We realized he must have gone searching his garage for a putter that would help with his vision and make it easier to align the ball. That’s exactly what the putter is designed to do.”
After a first round of 3-under par 68 at the Scottish Open, the 40-year-old player shot a second round 63 and followed with a 69 and 73.”The Goose” has dramatically improved his statistics in 2009 from those of the 2007-2008 seasons. He has moved to inside the top 40 in putting, and finished the Barclays at 32nd in Putts Per Round averaging 29 per round, besting his average from the BMW International Open by one stroke.
“We all go through patches in this game,” said the player with 6 career Top 10 finishes at The Open Championship. “Nobody knows why. Otherwise, all of us would be No. 1, and that’s how it is.”
