Cink’s win marks the second straight major victory won this year with a Nike square-shaped driver
Nike Golf momentum is accelerating at full speed with the addition of Nike athlete Stewart Cink’s first major championship victory of his career at The OPEN Championship.
Cink follows fellow Nike Golf athlete Lucas Glover’s major win at the U.S. Open and each champion has some major things in common: being the first and second players in history to win with a square-shaped driver, the Nike SQ SUMO” Tour; and they both are the first and second players to win a major championship this year with the much talked about Nike prototype putter.
One of the keys to winning the historic Claret Jug was Cink’s solid putting, which assisted him to making an impressive four birdies on the back nine. On the 72nd hole, Cink made a critical putt for birdie to get himself into a playoff position. For the outright win, Cink birdied two of the four playoff holes. Also assisting him in navigating the blustery weather conditions was his Nike ONE Tour D ball, which helped to give him distance and spin control, both of which are key factors in these types of conditions.
Nike Golf’s Bo Van Pelt Grabs First PGA Tour Title to Seal a Nike Swoosh-Dominated Weekend
While Cink was busy capturing his first major title at The OPEN Championship, fellow Nike Golf athlete Bo Van Pelt was focusing on winning his first PGA Tour event at the U.S. Bank Championship. He succeeded by shooting a final round score of 64 to get into a sudden-death playoff, which he won after two playoff holes. Van Pelt averaged 308-yard drives using the winning combination of the new Nike SQ DYMO Driver and Nike ONE Tour ball. With two victories coming from Van Pelt and Cink this weekend, Nike Golf has won a total of seven times in 2009, including two major championships.
