Unique Program Not Only Gives a Day Inside The Ropes But Meets Timely Charitable Needs
(July 23th, 2009 – Coral Springs, FL) – Caddy For A Cure, Inc., the non-profit program which raises funds for charities by offering the opportunity to caddy for the world’s best golfers, was able to respond to a very current and heart-touching need from the participation of Wisconsin native and professional golfer, Jerry Kelly, at the recent U.S. Bank Championship.
For six years, Caddy For A Cure has been offering golf fans the opportunity to win auctions to caddy at PGA TOUR events while concurrently helping change lives for the better with the proceeds. Donations received by the program over the years have allowed Caddy For A Cure to contribute to many needs and causes worldwide, including to such organizations as the Alzheimers Association, ALS, the American Cancer Society, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, many children’s hospitals across the country, GlobalGiving, and many others.
The Caddy For A Cure program is not only unique in its offering in professional golf, but it is unique in how it is able to help others. At the heart of the program is the desire to spread awareness and seek a cure for a disease called Fanconi anemia and to support the Wounded Warrior Project. But concurrent with these two causes, Caddy For A Cure makes donations to each of the PGA TOUR tournament host sites at which it offers caddy opportunities, as well as to the individual charities selected by the participating players.
This method of funding distribution allows Caddy For A Cure to meet many different needs, some which are well-known and longstanding, and others which may be more immediate or unexpected needs. At the U.S. Bank Championship, Jerry Kelly chose to direct his share of the caddy donation to an unexpected need – that of fellow golfer Chris Smith. Smith recently lost his wife, Beth, in a tragic car accident which also left his two children with critical injuries. In honor of Beth, friends of the family established a Memorial Fund Trust to provide support for the rehabilitation and college needs for the Smith children.
“It was such an honor to be at this great tournament with a home-town favorite like Jerry. He is a world-class player but more importantly, he is a world-class person with a huge heart. He has supported our program from its inception and is always looking for ways to help others” said Russ Holden, Caddy For A Cure founder and veteran professional caddy. He continued “This tournament is a perfect example of what Caddy For A Cure is all about, being able to touch many lives, whether the fight has been longstanding or just begun. It’s a way to make a difference from the great sport of professional golf.”
