August 3, 2009 – Tokyo, Japan
Yonex Tour Professional and teenage superstar Ryo Ishikawa, shot a final round 5-under 67 to claim victory at the Japan Golf Tour’s Sun Chlorella Classic in Otaru Japan.
In route to his wire-to-wire victory, Ryo shot rounds of 65 (-7), 68 (-4), 71 (-1), 67 (-5) for a total score of 17-under 271. Ishikawa’s win was his second victory of the year on the Japan Golf Tour and fourth of his career.
In a final round battle with Australian Brendan Jones, who shot a final round 65, Ishikawa carded eight birdies, none more important than the eight foot birdie putt he rolled in on the 18th hole to secure his victory.
“My final putt had one last roll into the cup. Lady Luck smiled on me from the first day and at the last moment as well.” said Ishikawa.
“I’ve never had a neck and neck battle like this. I felt the difficulty of starting the final round with the lead. Luckily, I ended up winning, but it could have gone either way,” he added.
“Brendan is an excellent player, I tip my hat to him. Without Brendan Jones, I wouldn’t have played that well in the final round. I’m proud of today’s great dual.”
With the Yonex NanoV Nextage Type 430 driver, Yonex NanoV Nextage Tour Forged irons and NanoV Nextage Type ST fairway wood as his weapons of choice, Ryo’s victory moved him to the top of the Japan Golf Tour’s Money List.
Ishikawa will now prepare for the final major of the year, the PGA Championship at Hazeltine National in Chaska, Minnesota. Ryo is set to become the youngest player ever to play in this event.
This will be the third major tournament of Ryo’s young career. In April, Ryo became the youngest player since 1952 to play at the Masters when he teed it up at Augusta National. In July, Ishikawa was paired with world No. 1, Tiger Woods for rounds one and two of the British Open at Turnberry.
