VICTORIA, Texas – EIDOLON Golf President/Founder Terry Koehler brought his straight-forward thoughts and perspectives about “tour bounce” wedges, the new grooves rule, the driver as the first “scoring” club and other topics to a recent interview with travelinggolfer.com. Koehler, who writes a popular blog as thewedgeguy.com, was typically outspoken in the 35-minute interview with travelinggolfer.com Founder Mike Sigers.
“If you don’t make your living on the PGA Tour, you don’t need ‘tour bounce” wedges,” Koehler said. “Tour bounces wedges are designed for the best players in the world.”
The PGA Tour, Koehler said, stipulates close-cut bunkers and fairways that watered down and firm so players can spin the ball out them into greens.
“Tour bounce wedges are designed to help the best players in the world play these conditions,” Koehler said.
The wedges average players buy off the rack, Koehler said, offer a variety of high-bounce, medium-bounce and low-bounce designs that create confusion on the sales floor and on the course. For example, Koehler said, most wedge companies sell high bounce wedges for fluffy lies and low bounce wedges for tighter lies. That all sounds good, but every average golfer, Koehler said, play courses that have all kinds of lies.
“Trying to choose a wedge in the store tomorrow that is right for some lie you’re going to encounter four months from now is a pretty hard challenge,” said Koehler.
The EIDOLON V-SOLE technology he invented builds into each wedge both low- and high-bounce characteristics.
“That allows it to be versatile,” Koehler said. “Bounce is a very personal thing (to golfers), but bounce is a very versatile thing in the EIDOLON Golf world. It really does make wedge play much easier.”
One of the game’s more knowledgeable wedge experts, Koehler explained the PGA Tour’s recent decision to put the USGA new grooves into affect beginning next year.
“Square grooves are not going to be outlawed,” Koehler said. “The only thing that’s going to happen is that we, as manufacturers, are going to have to start putting more a radiused edge on our grooves.” In theory, at least, “that’s going to reduce the spin you, as a golfer, can put on a golf ball,” Koehler said.
