Injects $1 Million into Golf Digest’s ‘Best Municipal Course in Delaware’
(VIENNA, VA) – Billy Casper Golf (“BCG”) – owner and operator of more than 100 courses in 25 states – has entered into a long-term lease with the City of Wilmington, Delaware for Ed Oliver Golf Club, in which BCG will invest more than $1 million for a capital-enhancements program.
Major course work includes bunker renovations, tree pruning, and new signage, tee and yardage markers, and ball washers. New golf carts and state-of-the-art maintenance equipment will further create memorable playing experiences for golfers.
Clubhouse remodeling includes new paint, carpet, interior design and major kitchen refurbishment to return casual dining and community events to their glory days.
BCG will turnkey all aspects of Ed Oliver’s golf course and property maintenance, staffing and training, clubhouse operations, food and beverage, merchandising, golf instruction, marketing and public relations, special events and financial management.
“We hold tremendous trust in Billy Casper Golf revitalizing Ed Oliver Golf Club,” says James M. Baker, Mayor of the City of Wilmington. “It’s gratifying to provide the community with yet another top-tier public-access recreational outlet.”
Roughly 15 months ago, BCG leased Rock Manor Golf Course from the City of Wilmington. BCG also leases Delcastle Golf Course inWilmington.
“Ed Oliver Golf Club is legendary among local golfers,” says Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of BCG. “We’re ecstatic to commit a heavy dose of resources and ‘shoe polish’ to its enjoyable course routing and historic clubhouse.”
Ed Oliver Golf Club was recently named “Best Municipal Course in Delaware” by Golf Digest. It shares elite company in the magazine’s Top 50 with Torrey Pines (CA) and Bethpage Black (NY), home of the past two U.S. Open Championships.
Located on the original site of Wilmington Country Club, Ed Oliver Golf Club – affectionately known as “Porky” Oliver – has delighted golfers for more than 100 years. Re-designed by renowned architects Alfred Tull and Ed Ault, the 18-hole, par-69, 6,115-yard layout retains only a century-old chimney on the signature 18th hole from the original design.
The spacious 4,000-square-foot clubhouse overlooks both the course and the Wilmington skyline, seating up to 190 guests for weddings and other social engagements.
