The World’s Hottest Social Media Phenomenon Is Coming To The World’s Largest Single-Site Golf Tournament
August 25, 2009, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Twitter, an increasingly popular social media platform, will be in widespread use during the 26th annual PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship. The World Am, which will be held August 31 through September 4, attracts 3,000 golfers from 45 states and more than 20 foreign countries to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
World Am participants are being encouraged to tweet about their experiences from the clubhouse to the World’s Largest 19th Hole, the event’s nightly party. The Twitter program will allow players to update friends, family and followers about their experiences during the week.
The World Am staff will utilize Twitter during the event to relay behind-the-scenes accounts of what is happening in the tournament office, at the 19th Hole and in the handicap room. Twitter will also be used to update players on breaking news throughout the event.
Players who don’t have a Twitter account will be able to get involved at the “Tweet Jockey” Twitter booth each night at the 19th Hole. Players and their guests will be able to submit tweets at the Tweet Jockey booth and see their comments displayed in a live stream on one of three huge JumboTron screens.
“To our knowledge, no one has attempted to use Twitter in this context, networking the many aspects of an athletic event of this size,” Dave Macpherson, the World Am’s tournament director, said. “The camaraderie among participants is one of the event’s primary strengths, and the use of Twitter should help strengthen that bond through online conversation.”
If not on Twitter already, participants or interested fans can visit Twitter.com/worldam to sign up for an account and receive current tournament news. Once signed up, players will be able to follow the official World Am Twitter feed and the tweets of other World Am golfers by searching #worldam.
Hosted by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, The PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship is a 72-hole tournament with participants competing for the right to be crowned “World Amateur Golf Champion.” The world’s largest single-site amateur golf tournament attracts 3,000 golfers from 45 states and more than 20 foreign countries. Players are flighted according to their handicap and at the conclusion of the four rounds, flight winners advance to the 18-hole world championship playoff at the renowned Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
