FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (September 1, 2009) – Patriot Golf Day is the flagship fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides postsecondary educational scholarships for the children and spouses of military men and women disabled or killed while serving our great nation.
This Labor Day weekend (September 4-7), golfers across the country are asked to add an extra dollar to their greens fees to fund Folds of Honor scholarships. The Patriot Golf Day campaign is jointly supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.
Of course, as proud home of the 82nd Airborne and America’s first name in defense, Fayetteville is truly a city that knows what it means to be ready at a moment’s notice, which is why many of Fayetteville’s finest area golf courses that previously joined ranks with the city’s “Golf – On the Ready” promotion have now enlisted to support Patriot Golf Day 2009 in a variety of ways, including a Veteran’s Golf Clinic and closest-to-the-pin prizes.
Dan Maples, Ellis Maples, Stewart Gooden, and Willard Byrd – some of golf’s top commanding officers – have left their legacy in Fayetteville with a variety of challenging and unique golf course designs that offer every player a chance to earn their stripes – and contribute to a worthy cause.
Bayonet at Puppy Creek Golf Club, Cypress Lakes Golf Course, Keith Hills County Club’s Creek and River Courses, and King’s Grant Country Club have joined ranks with courses through the region, state and country as part of Patriot Golf Day 2009.
At Bayonet Golf Club at Puppy Creek, a Willard Byrd design sculpted through the rolling hills surrounding Puppy Creek will be collecting donations over the four days of the campaign. With five sets of tees, this championship course has been created for golfers of all skill levels. Bayonet also offers the region’s largest and best conditioned practice area, including a 20-acre golf practice facility featuring 10 target greens and a short-game area.
Cypress Lakes will take special collections on Labor Day. Best known as the original home to the Floyds (Raymond and Marlene), Cypress Lakes challenges and delights the most avid golfers with championship-caliber greens and prime playing conditions nurtured over the past decade. Stretching from 5,800 to 7,000 yards, Cypress Lakes is an extremely fair course to play with no blind shots to the greens.
Keith Hills Country Club will donate portions of its weekend greens fees and hold a special golf tournament as part of a Campbell University home football game. Keith Hills has long been a hidden treasure in the Southeast and has played host to numerous amateur events. North Carolina Magazine has rated its Creek Course, designed by Ellis Maples, as high as the state’s seventh-best public golf course. The newer River Course, designed by Dan Maples, opened in Fall 2002. Keith Hills boasts large, bent grass greens and rolling, plush fairways as it winds through a golfing community set on the Cape Fear River.
King’s Grant plans to conduct a Veteran’s Golf Clinic on September 4 and offer closest-to-the-pin prizes on its five par-3s on September 5. The course provides a unique blend of fun and challenging holes, with numerous elevation changes and a strong emphasis on shot placement and accuracy. Voted the Readers’ Choice Award Winner as the best golf course in Cumberland County by the Fayetteville Observer, King’s Grant offers gently rolling bent grass greens and five sets of tees to provide maximum enjoyment for all golfers, including NCAA Division III power Methodist College. Two beautiful cypress lakes, frequent natural areas, and well-placed bunkers keep the golfers attention as they tour around this scenic layout.
